Democrats Accuse Republicans of ‘Reconnaissance’ Tours Without Evidence; Republicans File Ethics Complaint and Urge Investigation into Member Misconduct
Washington,
May 12, 2021
Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) issued the following statement after Republican members of the Committee on House Administration filed an ethics complaint with the House Committee on Ethics urging that an investigation be opened into the conduct of Representative Mikie Sherrill and 33 other Democrats for alleging – without evidence – that Members of Congress led reconnaissance tours of the United States Capitol on January 5, 2021.
“A Member of Congress accusing another Member of committing a crime, without evidence, is morally reprehensible and a stain on this institution. No Republican Member of Congress led any kind of ‘reconnaissance’ tours through the Capitol, proven by security footage captured by the U.S. Capitol Police. “These thirty-four Members of Congress who willfully and gleefully levied these unsubstantiated accusations on television, radio, social media, and in the letter to Senate Sergeant at Arms, House Sergeant at Arms, and the United States Capitol Police, need to be investigated and be subject to the requisite consequences. “My Republican colleagues and I will not sit by while Democrats accuse their colleagues of treason for political gain. This type of conduct must not be tolerated; and, the Committee on Ethics needs to take quick and decisive action to ensure this never happens again.” The ethics complaint to the Committee on Ethics was signed by Republicans on the Committee on House Administration: Ranking Member Rodney Davis (R-IL), Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), and Rep. Bryan Steil (R-WI). The 34 Members of Congress the Ethics Complaint asks the Committee on Ethics to investigate are: Rep. Mikie Sherrill, Rep. Katherine Clark, Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr., Rep. Daniel T. Kildee, Rep. Abigail D. Spanberger, Rep. Grace Meng, Rep. Tom Malinowski, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Jahana Hayes, Rep. Veronica Escobar, Rep. Ted W. Lieu, Rep. Ann McLane Kuster, Rep. Michael F. Doyle, Jr., Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, Rep. Dean Phillips, Rep. Jared Huffman, Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr., Rep. Sara Jacobs, Rep. Elaine G. Luria, Rep. Mike Levin, Rep. Norma J. Torres, Rep. Susan Wild, Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, Rep. Jackie Speier, Rep. Lizzie Fletcher, Rep. Kathleen M. Rice, Rep. Nikema Williams, Rep. André Carson, Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr., Rep.
