  In the News: A spouse’s love lives through Alzheimer’s advocacy

When Ruthellyn Kupsky suffered a stroke in 2001, her husband Fritz said she recovered fairly well. Her recovery from knee surgery in 2005 was different, Kupsky said. “Ruthellyn’s rehabilitation was difficult. She became uncommunicative. You’d have to classify it as dementia,” he said. “She loved to read and she became severely depressed. It was a struggle for me to keep her up for more than six hours.”

Ruthellyn Kupsky lost the use of one hand and used a wheelchair to get around. During that time Kupsky sought help from the Cherokee County Caregiver’s Assistance Network group (offered through Cherokee County Senior Services), and to get someone to stay with his wife while he attended caregiver meetings.
