Press Release: Rep. Loudermilk Introduces Bill to Improve Privacy and Protect Americans’ Personal Information

Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga) issued the following statement after he introduced the Protecting Investors’ Personally Identifiable Information Act:

“The Securities and Exchange Commission’s new database called the Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT) will be a one-stop-shop for malign governments and hackers to access the personally identifiable information of every single American who invests in the stock market unless serious safeguards are put into place. The SolarWinds cyberattack in 2020, which is among the worst cyber-espionage incidents in U.S. history that resulted in multiple data breaches of the U.S. federal government and private sector, is a prime example of the dangers that exist when the government holds massive amounts of sensitive data.

In the News: [federal] Tax Day for individuals extended to May 17: Treasury, IRS extend filing and payment deadline

  IRS:

"The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced today that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021. The IRS will be providing formal guidance in the coming days.

'This continues to be a tough time for many people, and the IRS wants to continue to do everything possible to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities,' said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. 'Even with the new deadline, we urge taxpayers to consider filing as soon as possible, especially those who are owed refunds. Filing electronically with direct deposit is the quickest way to get refunds, and it can help some taxpayers more quickly receive any remaining stimulus payments they may be entitled to.' "

Rep. Loudermilk Supports Effort to Protect House Intelligence Committee and Help Those Trying to Escape Persecution in China

Rep. Loudermilk recently joined and cosponsored the following House Resolutions and bills:

House Resolution to remove Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) from the House Intelligence Committee (Republican Leader McCarthy R-CA)

• Prior to his time in Congress, Rep. Swalwell was the target of a “highly sophisticated malign foreign influence campaign” by Chinese intelligence authorities. This intelligence operative developed a romantic relationship with Rep. Swalwell. The FBI held a defensive briefing with him on the operative. After that briefing, the operative fled to China where she now resides.

Hong Kong Safe Harbor Act (Rep. Curtis, R-UT)

• The bill designates certain Hong Kong residents (democracy activists and those persecuted by China) with priority status for new refugee consideration.
