Rep. Loudermilk Introduces ‘Return to Work Act’
Washington,
May 20, 2021
Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) issued the following statement after he introduced the Return to Work Act (H.R. 3254), which would end the federal unemployment subsidy of $300 per week that is being paid in addition to state unemployment benefits.
“Demand is far outpacing supply in many areas of the economy, which means inflation is rising, the cost of goods is rising, and hardworking Americans and our economy are paying the price – literally. Why are employers struggling to fill the record 8.1 million jobs available when the unemployment rate is 6.1%? It’s because we are paying millions of people to stay at home instead of finding a job. “This week, I introduced the Return to Work Act to help small businesses get the employees they need, so Americans can get back to work and our economy can get back to the historic levels we saw before the pandemic. With the CDC giving the green light to reopening, and with an historic amount of jobs available, there is no longer a reason for the federal unemployment subsidies to continue. Twenty-two states, including Georgia, have already announced they will end the federal subsidy. I believe it’s time the rest of the nation follows suit; because, when America is hard at work, there isn’t anything we can’t accomplish. I look forward to working with my House and Senate colleagues to advance this needed legislation.” Background • The Return to Work Act will end the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) of $300 per week on May 31, 2021. • Text of the bill can be found HERE. |
